Rugged outdoor tablets are used in industries such as manufacturing, public safety, workshops, construction sites, and forestry and agriculture. This article compares the four current Durabook tablets Robustbook offers, with core data per the datasheet: the Durabook U11I, the Durabook R11, the Durabook R11L, and the Durabook R8, covering display size, processor, rating, and battery life.
Rugged tablets are built for harsh environments: shock-resistant to MIL-STD-810, dust- and water-protected to an IP rating, with batteries built for a full workday, and optionally with displays that stay readable in direct sunlight. A standard consumer tablet usually does not hold up long under these conditions: a single drop from hip height onto concrete can crack the display, and fine dust on construction sites quickly works its way into ports and vents without an IP rating.
The Durabook U11I offers an 11.6-inch FHD display, optionally with 1,000-nit sunlight readability. The standard processor is an Intel® Core™ i5-1230U with vPro™ (12th generation, up to 4.4 GHz), with an optional Intel® Core™ i7-1250U with vPro™. Memory ranges from 8 GB to 32 GB, and storage starts at 256 GB and can be configured up to 2 TB. Per the datasheet, the device reaches IP66 and is tested to MIL-STD-810H and MIL-STD-461G. At 1.39 kg and with a battery reaching 10 hours of runtime (optionally 20 hours with a hi-cap hot-swap battery), the U11I suits long shifts without a power outlet. The U11I is also certified to ATEX Zone 2/22, allowing use in explosive atmospheres.
The Durabook R11 also offers an 11.6-inch Full HD display, optionally at 1,000 nits. The standard processor is an Intel® Core™ i5-1235U with vPro™ (12th generation, up to 4.4 GHz), with an optional Intel® Core™ i7-1255U with vPro™. Memory can be configured from 8 GB to 32 GB DDR5, and storage starts at 256 GB. Per the datasheet, the R11 reaches IP66 and is tested to MIL-STD-810H and MIL-STD-461F. At 1.2 kg, it is lighter than the U11I, with battery life at 8.5 hours (optionally 15 hours with the long-life battery).
The Durabook R11L shares its housing and display size with the R11, but uses a more economical Intel® Pentium® Gold 8505 (up to 4.4 GHz, 1 performance core and 4 efficiency cores). Memory is fixed at 8 GB DDR5, and storage starts at 128 GB. Per the datasheet, the R11L also reaches IP66 and is tested to MIL-STD-810H and MIL-STD-461F, with the 1,000-nit display variant optional here too. In terms of weight (1.2 kg) and battery life (8.5 hours, optionally 15 hours), the R11L barely differs from the R11; the main difference lies in the processor and the entry price.
At 8.0 inches, the Durabook R8 is considerably more compact than the three 11.6-inch models. The standard processor is an Intel® Core™ i5-1230U with vPro™, with an optional Intel® Core™ i7-1250U with vPro™. Memory ranges from 8 GB to 16 GB, and storage from 128 GB to 1 TB. Per the datasheet, the R8 also reaches IP66 and is tested to MIL-STD-810H and MIL-STD-461G. At 0.86 kg, it is by far the lightest device in this comparison, with 8.5 hours of battery life (optionally 17 hours). All four tablets can be adapted through an interactive configurator on the relevant product page. The U11I offers the most extensive options at 35 groups, followed by the R11 at 19 groups. The R11L, as the entry model of the R11 family, covers 14 groups, and the R8 falls in between at 30 groups. Anyone needing many accessory and expansion options, docking solutions, vehicle mounts, or expansion modules with an RFID and smart card combo reader, for example, should factor this group count into the selection.
Not every tablet in this comparison is certified for explosive atmospheres. Per the datasheet, only the Durabook U11I carries the additional ATEX certification for Zone 2/22. For use in the chemical industry, refineries, or areas with combustible dust, this additional certification is a decisive selection criterion that cannot be added later through the configurator.
The Durabook U11I suits demanding industrial applications with high performance needs and potential explosion-protection requirements. The R11 and R11L fit mobile deployments in public safety and workshops, where mobility and a balanced price-to-performance ratio matter most. The compact R8 suits deployments where weight and size are decisive, such as forestry and agriculture or mobile inspection rounds. Anyone undecided between the R11 and R11L should check actual performance needs first: for pure data entry and form processing, the more economical R11L processor is usually enough, while more demanding applications with several programs open at once are better served by the more powerful R11 processor.
