The New Rugged Tablet: Durabook R8

At 8.0 inches, the Durabook R8 is the most compact tablet in Robustbook's current Durabook lineup. Anyone looking for a device that fits in a jacket pocket while still passing MIL-STD-810H and IP66 will find a solid candidate in the R8. This article walks through the core specifications per the datasheet and outlines the use cases the compact format suits best.

Display Size and Resolution

The R8 has an 8.0-inch display at HD resolution (1,280 x 800 pixels). For a device this size, that is a common trade-off between detail and power draw for professional outdoor use. The display can optionally be fitted with a sunlight-readable variant at 800 nits, which per the datasheet is actually standard equipment on this device.

Rating, Test Standard and Operating Temperature

Per the datasheet, the Durabook R8 reaches IP66 and is tested to MIL-STD-810H as well as MIL-STD-461G. IP66 means complete dust protection and protection against powerful water jets from any angle. The additional MIL-STD-461G test covers electromagnetic compatibility and matters most for use in safety-critical or military environments. Rounding out the specification is an operating temperature range of -20 °C to 60 °C per the datasheet, covering winter outdoor deployments as well as summer heat in a vehicle or on an open construction site without throttling the electronics.

Processor and Performance

The standard processor is an Intel® Core™ i5-1230U with vPro™ (12th generation, 12 MB cache, up to 4.4 GHz); an Intel® Pentium® Gold 8500 (8 MB cache, up to 4.4 GHz) is available as an alternative. Anyone needing more performance can optionally upgrade to an Intel® Core™ i7-1250U with vPro™ (12 MB cache, up to 4.7 GHz). For compute-heavy tasks such as CAD viewing, the compact format does reach its limits, but for data entry, documentation, form processing and mobile reporting, the performance is more than sufficient.

Memory and Storage

The R8 ships with 8 GB of LPDDR4x memory, which is soldered on board and can be configured up to 16 GB. Storage is a 128 GB PCIe NVMe SSD as standard, with 256 GB, 512 GB or 1 TB available as options.

Battery and Swappable Battery Technology

The built-in lithium-ion battery (7.6 V, 3600 mAh) reaches 8.5 hours of runtime per the datasheet. Durabook also offers an optional long-life battery (7,200 mAh, 17 hours). Particularly relevant for field use is the swappable battery technology: the battery can be swapped in around 5 minutes without tools. That allows continuous operation through a full working day, even without access to a power outlet.

Weight and Handling

At 0.86 kg, the R8 is among the lighter rugged tablets compared with the larger 11.6-inch models such as the Durabook U11I or the Durabook R11. For one-handed use, for example while operating machinery or tools at the same time, the low weight is a practical advantage over larger tablets.

Interfaces

The R8 offers a Thunderbolt 4 port, a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port (Type-C, DP-capable), an audio combo jack, a microSD card reader, a 20-pin Pogo docking connector, and a Nano-SIM slot as standard. Optionally configurable are USB 3.2 Gen 1 (Type-A), one or two RJ45 Ethernet ports, one or two RS232 interfaces, a barcode scanner, a magnetic stripe reader, and an RF antenna pass-through.

Connectivity

Wireless connectivity is provided by Intel® Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth® v5.3. The device can optionally be fitted with GPS and 4G LTE broadband, which makes the R8 interesting for mobile, location-aware applications too, in logistics or field service, for example.

Expansion Module and Accessories

Durabook optionally offers an expansion module for the R8 with a smart card reader including RS-232/RJ-45 and USB 3.2. Available accessories include a vehicle adapter, charging stations, an input pen, smart card and RFID options, and folio cases. The interactive configurator on the product page covers 30 groups in total, spanning everything from RAM to communication to carrying solutions.

Camera and On-Site Documentation

For field documentation, the R8 has a 2 MP front camera; the Core i5 configuration additionally adds an 11 MP rear camera. That allows damage, meter readings or construction progress to be photographed directly on the device and linked to the relevant line-of-business application, without carrying a separate camera. Under changing light, from shaded basements to bright sunlight on a construction site, the combination of the rear camera resolution and the optional 800-nit display is particularly useful for checking shots directly on the device.

Warranty and Protection

The configurator on the product page allows the R8 to be protected with an extended warranty, accidental damage protection, and an extended battery warranty. Because rugged tablets often stay in continuous use for several years, it is worth reviewing these options already at the initial configuration stage, especially if the device will regularly face drops or stress beyond the MIL-STD-810H test conditions. The 30 configurator groups cover hardware. They also cover carrying straps, vehicle mounts and docking accessories, so the R8 can be adapted to very different workflows.

Which Use Cases Suit the R8?

The compact format appeals mostly to users who are on the move a lot and want a device that does not get in the way even when carried for long periods: forestry and agriculture, mobile maintenance teams, inspection rounds, or public safety personnel. Anyone who needs a larger display for detail-rich views is better served by an 11.6-inch model such as the Durabook U11I or R11. Within the Durabook tablet range, the R8 remains the most compact model: the larger 11.6-inch tablets offer more screen area and, in some cases, more memory, but also weigh noticeably more. A detailed device-by-device comparison is available in the article Rugged Outdoor Tablets Compared.
