IP54 Rating Explained: What It Covers and Where It Falls Short

Searching for what is IP54 usually turns up a one-line claim that a device is "dust and splash proof". The IP54 rating is more specific than that, and also narrower: it does not mean dust-tight, and it does not make a device waterproof in any strict sense. This article takes the two digits apart, explains what an IP54 rating actually tests for under DIN EN 60529, shows where it sits next to IP55, IP65 and IP67, and lists the handful of devices in Robustbook's range that fall short of it.

What Is an IP54 Rating?

An IP54 rating is made up of two digits that are tested and awarded separately: the first digit covers protection against contact and solid foreign objects, the second covers protection against water. IP stands for International Protection, occasionally read as Ingress Protection. A device can score high on one digit and low on the other, so the two always need to be read together rather than as a single combined score.

First Digit 5: Dust-Protected, Not Dust-Tight

The 5 in the first position means complete protection against contact plus protection against dust in harmful quantities, and nothing beyond that. Some dust may enter the housing during the test, as long as it does not affect the device's function or safety. That is what separates a 5 from a 6: dust-tight, meaning no dust ingress at all, only starts at the higher digit. For a device that spends months on a dusty site or in an unheated workshop, this distinction matters in practice: fine dust settles in vents and around connectors over time, even when it never causes an outright failure.

Second Digit 4: Splashing Water From Any Direction

The second digit 4 covers protection against splashing water from any direction, water that lands on the housing without being aimed, such as rain blown sideways by wind or a puddle someone walks past. It explicitly does not cover a directed jet of water. This is the point where an IP54 rating gets overestimated most often: splashing and a jet sound similar in everyday language, but they are two separately tested types of stress with their own digit.

How the IP54 Test Is Actually Performed

For the second digit 4, the device is sprayed from all sides using an oscillating spray head or a handheld shower, for at least five minutes, with no minimum pressure specified and no nozzle that would produce a focused jet. For the first digit 5, the device sits inside a dust chamber where talcum powder is circulated while a slight vacuum inside the housing draws in air, and with it, dust. The two tests run independently of each other; a manufacturer may run them separately or together, but the result is always documented as two distinct digits.

Is IP54 Waterproof?

No. "Waterproof" is not a term the standard defines at all, and even in the everyday sense it does not apply to IP54. The test only covers splashing water, not a directed jet, and certainly not submersion. An IP54 device handles a rain shower without issue. It does not handle someone hosing dirt off it, and it does not handle being dropped in water.

IP54 Versus IP55: Splashing Water Versus a Water Jet

Between IP54 and IP55, only the second digit changes, from 4 to 5, but the practical gap is larger than a single step suggests. Splashing water is undirected and unpressurised; a water jet comes from a nozzle with a defined flow rate and pressure. A device that passes the splash test does not automatically pass the jet test as well, since the two are tested and certified separately. IP54 Versus IP65 and IP67: How Far Apart They Really Sit

The gap to IP65 covers both digits at once: dust-tight instead of dust-protected, and a water jet instead of splashing water. IP65 is the stricter requirement on both counts. IP67 is not simply a step up on the same scale but a change in the type of stress altogether: it tests temporary immersion, not a water jet. A device rated IP67 will, in almost every case, also cope with splashing water without trouble, because immersion is by far the harder test. The reverse does not hold: an IP54 device is not automatically fit for submersion, since that requires a dedicated test of its own.

Why an IP54 Rating Is Often the Wrong Call Outdoors

Anyone specifying IP54 for a device meant for a construction site, a workshop or a field team risks ending up with a device that fails the moment someone hoses it down, and that failure would still be within spec, because a water jet was never part of the IP54 test to begin with. For genuine field use, where devices routinely get wet and need to be rinsed off, IP65 is the requirement that actually covers that scenario. IP54 fits devices that mostly sit under cover and only face occasional splashing.

Where an IP54 Rating Is Genuinely Enough

For indoor spaces with occasional water contact, a workshop where something gets spilled now and then, or a stationary device sitting under a roof, IP54 covers the realistic load case. Devices that are also mechanically shielded by a housing or a mount can be a reasonable fit too, even though the digit on the datasheet looks lower than IP65 or IP67. What matters is not the highest rating available, but the one that matches the actual exposure the device will face.

Which Devices in the Range Fall Short of IP54

Of the 45 documented laptops and tablets in the Robustbook range, 40 meet the IP54 requirement. The other 5 fall short, not because their first digit is missing, but because their second digit sits too low: four devices are rated IP53, which only covers spraying water up to 60° from vertical and sits below the level 4 that IP54 requires. One device is rated IP5X, where the X means no digit was tested or stated for water protection at all. All five exceptions happen to be laptops with a large display. Keyboard, hinge and active cooling make sealing against a directed jet harder, while dust protection on these models is still enough to satisfy the first digit of IP54.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is IP54 Enough for Permanent Outdoor Use?

Usually not. Outdoors, devices regularly face wind-driven rain, hose cleaning or contact with puddles, stress that goes beyond plain splashing water. For permanent outdoor use, IP65 is the more suitable requirement.

Is IP54 Better or Worse Than IP53?

Better. The first digit is identical in both, but the second rises from 3 (spraying water up to 60°) to 4 (splashing water from any direction). IP54 therefore covers a wider range of water exposure than IP53.

Can I Use an IP54 Device in the Rain?

In normal rain, yes. In wind-driven rain from changing directions over an extended period, the exposure moves toward the edge of what the second digit 4 actually covers.

What Does the IP5X Marking Mean?

The X is a placeholder: no test was run, or no rating was stated, for the second digit. A device marked IP5X is dust-protected but carries no documented water protection at all, not even against simple splashing.
