Robust laptops and tablets for use in the workshop
Laptops and tablets are not only used in leisure time or exclusively in the office, but are also part of the basic equipment of every workshop and craft businesses in general.
These sectors have also evolved and are increasingly using the benefits of digitalisation to make work more effective and easier.
However, workshops do not usually use classic laptops and tablets, but rather very special robust laptops and tablets that are adapted to the conditions and have been specifically developed for use in the workshop. But why exactly does a robust laptop or tablet make sense in the workshop and what are the special features and characteristics of these laptops and tablets? Find out here!
Why does a robust laptop / tablet make sense in the workshop?
Workshops generate a lot of dust and dirt, which can also accumulate on laptops and tablets. The workshop is also a somewhat harsh environment and if you are not careful for a moment, your laptop or tablet can end up on the hard concrete floor and the fall can quickly end in a total loss.
Transporting laptops and tablets in workshops and pushing them around on rough workbenches can also lead to dangerous impacts and damage to the device. Work environments such as workshops therefore pose serious risks for commercially available laptops and tablets.
Special devices are required that are optimally adapted and suitable for such an environment.
The special features of a robust laptop / tablet
A robust laptop / tablet should be certified in accordance with the military standard MIL-STD-810G and also have IP5X, IP53 or IP65 certification, depending on the area of application.
Robust devices with MIL-STD-810G certification undergo a series of performance tests to ensure that they fulfil the requirements for military purposes. Devices certified to the military standard can withstand extreme temperatures, temperature changes, vibrations and other extreme conditions. They are therefore ideally suited for use in a workshop. Even under extreme conditions and heavy drops or extreme temperatures, robust laptops and tablets remain functional.
Robust laptops/tablets with IP5X certification are protected against dust in harmful quantities and offer complete protection against contact. The drop protection for this certification is up to 90 cm. Devices with IP53 certification offer slightly stronger protection and are fully protected against water and dust. These devices are also equipped with a drop protection of up to 120 cm. IP65 certification goes one step further and a robust laptop/tablet is fully protected against dust, contact and water jets from any direction. Such a laptop can therefore even be used outdoors during a car wash or in rainy weather without any problems. The IP65 drop protection is designed for drops of up to 180 cm.
What can the RS232 interface be used for in the workshop?
The RS232 interface is one of the most widely used standards for serial connections. The RS232 interface is a voltage interface and a standardised transmission protocol ensures that serial transmissions between two devices function smoothly. In the past, it was standard for PCs to have two RS232 interfaces. Nowadays, USB and wireless technologies are usually found on commercially available devices. However, serial interfaces have by no means been completely replaced. The RS232 interface remains relevant for simple data transfer, particularly in an operational context where tried and tested security standards are sufficient.
